Why Food & Farming Matter

The Agri-Food sector is a key and vital industry in Lincolnshire and of national significance which is why the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership (GLLEP) has identified the agri-food sector as one of the region's top three most important sectors.

The below facts and figures show how crucial the food and farming sector in Greater Lincolnshire is:

• 1/8th of the nation's food is grown and raised in Greater Lincolnshire including 25% of vegetables, 21% of turkeys and 19% of sugar beet

• 70% of UK seafood is processed in Greater Lincolnshire

• The Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership (GLLEP) area contains almost 25% of England's Grade 1 agricultural land

• Food and farming businesses employ 56,000 people directly and this rises to over 100,000 people when food retailing and catering are included

• The food chain in the Greater Lincolnshire area is estimated to generate a gross value added (GVA) of £2.5bn, which rises to £3.5bn if the food retailing and catering sector are included

• 360,000 HGV loads of produce travel through Lincolnshire each year

• Lincolnshire has the 3rd highest total area of farm land of all counties in England

• Direct value of the Agri-food sector to the Greater Lincolnshire economy is £1.5bn a year
